Coverage in Japan

Enjoy wireless voice roaming in Japan with your Bell phone number. Because of technology differences in that country, you will need to insert your BlackBerry® 8830™ or Motorola A840 SIM card into a local UMTS phone or smartphone. Find out how to rent a UMTS device in Japan.

*When powered on in another country, the BlackBerry 8830® World Edition is equipped to find a data network and automatically connect to that network. In the event that this does not occur and data is available in that country, you will need to manually switch the device to another network. Please confirm data availability and network partner for the country or countries you are visiting in the chart above.

Using your services abroad

Making a call

Before you travel abroad with your CDMA phone, please add the free feature (OVS) to your account. This can be done by logging into your account online and selecting this feature, by calling Client Care at 1 800 667-0123, or by visiting a Bell store.1

To make a local call or to call within a country, follow the dialling pattern of that country.

When making an international while roaming on a GSM network, the international dialling code is not required. Simply begin your number with the "+" symbol. To get the "+" symbol on your mobile phone, hold the "0" key for a few seconds until "+" appears on the display.

Sending and receiving text messages

While abroad, send a text message the same way you would at home.

For example, to send a text message from abroad to a Calgary phone number, dial 403 XXX XXXX. To send a text message from France to a German mobile number, dial 011 49 XX XXX XXXX.

Using email and Internet on your BlackBerry 8830® World Edition

When powered on in another country, the BlackBerry 8830® World Edition is equipped to find a data network and automatically connect to that network. In the event that this does not occur and data is available in that country, you will need to manually switch the device to another network. Please confirm data availability and network partner for the country or countries you are visiting in the chart above.

To manually switch your smartphone to another network, please follow these steps:

The BlackBerry 8830® World Edition default "Network Mode" is set to "Global", which means it will automatically select an available CDMA or GSM network.

In case your smartphone is not in "Global" mode, here is how to select it:

  • Select Applications
  • Go to Manage Connections
  • Select Mobile Network Options
  • Select Network Mode
  • Select Global

In the event your smartphone is already set to "Global" mode and doesn't automatically select a network that supports email and Internet, you will need to do two things:

1) Select GSM mode:

  • Go to Manage Connections
  • Select Mobile Network Options
  • Select Network Mode
  • Select GSM

2) Select a GSM network that supports email and Internet:

  • Select Network Selection Mode
  • Select Manual
  • Select Mobile Network
  • Select Network Name

1This feature can be added at any time if your account is paid by preauthorized credit card or debit payments. Otherwise, you will need to have an account with Bell Mobility for at least six months, in good standing.
